This autobiography of Maya Angelou was published in 1969 and is best for students in high school and older. The author tells of her life growing up in the segregated south of the 1930s, as well as her experiences living with divorced parents in California during WWII. Throughout the tale of her young life (the book ends when she is only 16-years-old), the author illustrates how the power of knowledge can overcome all challenges, including racism, scars of rape, and an inferiority-complex faced in her own life.
