4. "Song of Solomon" by Toni Morrison

This novel was published in 1977 and is best for students in high school and older. It tells the coming-of-age story of an African-American man, Milkman Dead, born and raised in Michigan, and helped earn the author a 1993 Nobel Prize in literature. The books tells of the protagonist and his extended family, and his travels from his home to the place of his family's origins.
