The Redskins, an NFL mainstay for decades that has been mediocre in recent years, rocketed back into the national spotlight last season largely thanks to the star power of rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III. Griffin had the best selling jersey in NFL history last year, and he made the Redskins organization exciting again.
Off the field, the Washington football franchise faces mounting pressure to get rid of the “Redskins” name. In May, ten members of Congress sent letters to Redskins owner Dan Snyder and NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, requesting the change, arguing that to Native Americans, the term is “a racial, derogatory slur akin to the 'N-word' among African Americans or the 'W-word' among Latinos." Snyder and the NFL have thus far resisted a name change.
