The novel by Aw, who is also the author of "Map of the Invisible World," follows various residents of Shanghai, from the titular billionaire to a pop star to a girl hoping to find a job in the big city, and considers how their lives intersect. "I don't think you need to be fascinated by China to enjoy this," says Nelson (although she admits that she is). "This book is thoughtful.... [I]t's a rumination on modern China."
