4. "The Universe Versus Alex Woods," by Gavin Extence

"The Universe Versus Alex Woods," a debut novel for Gavin Extence, tells the story of a teenager, Alex, who became famous for being struck by a meteorite when he was 10, and the unlikely friendship that Alex strikes up with a crotchety widower. Nelson compares the novel to the early work of Kurt Vonnegut. "This is a classic book with tremendous cross-over [potential]," she says.
