The world's top universities in 2012

British-based higher education consulting firm Quacquarelli Symonds released its annual global ranking of universities this week. Here are the top 10.

1. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)

If Oxford is the global epicenter for humanities scholarship, then MIT is the scientific equivalent. No. 1 in chemistry, computer science, chemical, electrical, and mechanical engineering, materials sciences, and physics, MIT beat out every other university in Cambridge this year, and therefore every other school in the world as well. The victory comes as a boost to the school as it recovers from a particularly harrowing semester. In April, a popular MIT security guard named Sean Collier was shot and killed by the Tsarnaev brothers, the accused Boston Marathon bombers.
