The world's top universities in 2012

British-based higher education consulting firm Quacquarelli Symonds released its annual global ranking of universities this week. Here are the top 10.

2. University of Cambridge

Cambridge, which came first in the world for the last two years, narrowly missed the top spot this year. Instead it had to settle for second place and 27 top 10 subject rankings. Employers in almost every field surveyed gave Cambridge a near perfect score for their perception of the school’s rigor and prestige. After all, who wouldn’t want to hire a student who attended the same university as Isaac Newton, Stephen Hawking, Charles Darwin, John Maynard Keynes, and Vladimir Nabokov (among others).
