The St. Louis Cardinals defeat the Los Angeles Dodgers, 12-5.
Dodger pitcher Chan Ho Park explained afterward that he was concentrating on getting Cardinals slugger Mark McGwire out, while giving little thought to St. Louis’s Fernando Tatis, who had the game of his life. Tatis became the first and only player to swat two grand slams in the same inning (the third). At 5 ft. 10. and 170 lbs., his previous single-season high home run total was eight. But in 1999, he managed to hit 34 homers.
Additional facts:
- Chan Ho Park was normally a pretty tough pitcher to face. His career record during 17 seasons was 124-98.
- The youngster who caught Tatis’s second grand slam quickly sold it to an adult fan for $80. He in turn, presented the ball to Tatis after the game in exchange for an autographed jersey and six autographed baseballs.
