The New York Mets defeat the Chicago Cubs, 5-0.

For only the second time in history, a team – in this case the Mets – completed a nine-inning game without recording a single fielding assist, meaning that no one was thrown out and all the outs were recorded with fly balls or strikeouts. The only other team to do it was Cleveland in 1945.

Additional fact: The Mets were involved in a similar game in 1993, when they became only the 11th team in history to go an entire game without an infield assist. Their only assist came when outfielder Joe Orsulak gunned down Chicago’s Steve  Buechele trying to stretch a single into a double. Sid Fernandez of the Mets was on the mound both in this game and the 1989 game in which there were no assists of any kind.
