The Colorado Rockies defeat the Atlanta Braves, 7-6.
In a 12-inning game in which both teams had used virtually every player on their rosters (including a combined 17 pitchers), Colorado turned to catcher Brent Mayne to pitch the top of the 12th inning. He had never pitched at any level and had been out of action for four games because of a wrist injury that prevented him from swinging a bat. His fastball topped out at only 83 m.p.h., but he kept the Braves from scoring. The Rockies scored in the bottom of the inning to make Mayne the first nonpitcher since outfielder Rocky Colavito in 1968 to win a major-league game.
Additional fact: Before notching his lone pitching win, Mayne, a 15-year veteran, had caught a no-hitter thrown by Kansas City’s Bret Saberhagen in 1991.
