Ruth’s immense talents did not lead to instantaneous stardom. After pitching two games for the Red Sox in 1914, he was sent down to the minors. It was there, while playing for the Providence Grays, that he hit his first professional home run, in Toronto, of all places. It was the only home run he ever hit in 46 minor-league games.
