10 best books of September: the Monitor's picks

Here are the 10 September books most recommended by the Monitor's book critics.

3. "Command and Control," by Eric Schlosser

Have Americans grown reasonably comfortable with the idea of a nuclear weapons stockpile? If so, they are making a mistake, argues investigative journalist Eric Schlosser in this lucid, intelligent, and frightening look at the history of nuclear weapons. Schlosser takes a good, hard look at what can go wrong with nuclear weapons and ends up concluding that Americans should perhaps be more scared of the bombs in their own backyards than of any missile parked in enemy territory.
