"How Literature Saved My Life" author David Shields is releasing this biography at the same time that a documentary of the same name is making headlines. Both delve into the life of "Catcher in the Rye" author J.D. Salinger. The new book covers all of Salinger's life but especially focuses on the decades when the author had retired from public life and the world knew little of his day-to-day routine. "It's the voices of people who really knew him," says Nelson. "There are a couple of revelations." The book is not only an interesting look at Salinger but also a rumination on fame and its place in our culture, she says.
