3. 'A House in the Sky,' by Amanda Lindhout

Lindhout makes her debut with this memoir, which tells the story of how she was kidnapped and held as a hostage by a group of Islamic extremists. Lindhout was traveling in Somalia and working as a journalist when she was abducted. During her captivity – which lasted for more than a year – she was taken from house to house and abused and raped. But she did not give up and even managed to feel some compassion for her kidnappers. "I think this book is really going to resonate with people," says Nelson. "It's just an amazing story of hope and triumph."
