2. 'The Maid's Version,' by Daniel Woodrell

"Winter's Bone" author Daniel Woodrell's latest novel tells the story of Alma, a maid to an important Missouri family who experiences tragedy when her sister is killed in the Arbor Dance Hall Explosion of 1929. Alma believes she knows why the explosion occurred and her search for answers affects her entire family. Nelson calls this story "very creepy." "It's like Faulkner meets Johnny Cash," she says.
