6. "Difficult Men," by Brett Martin

When did television get so good? That is the question that GQ correspondent Brett Martin tackles in Difficult Men, his examination of what he calls "the third golden age of television" – 1999 to the present. Martin talks to and about some of the movers and shakers of cable TV – David Chase ("The Sopranos"), David Simon and Ed Burns ("The Wire"), and Matthew Weiner and Jon Hamm ("Mad Men"). Martin's analysis is intelligent and his cultural commentary will be of interest to fans of many of today's better-written shows. Read our full review of "Difficult Men" here.
