How many more food-based memoirs does the reading public really need? Novelist Kate Christensen proves that there's always room for one more, provided that it's good and this one is. After six novels (including "The Astral"), award-winning writer Christensen decided to tell her own story in Blue Plate Special: An Autobiography of My Appetites. Christensen writes about her life from the time of her parents' divorce (which meant her abrupt relocation to Arizona), up through her often difficult years of schooling (in New York; France; Portland, Ore.; and Iowa), and her efforts to settle into adult life. She finishes in a happier and more stable present. There's plenty of food (and no shortage of alcohol) in these pages, counterbalanced with some really fine prose. Recipes included.
