In the novel by Percy, who is also the author of works including "The Wilding," some members of society are "lycans," or werewolves. Lycans are marginalized by society and regarded as second-class citizens. Human Patrick meets lycan Claire as politics and attacks by lycan radicals change the world around them. Nelson compares the book to author Justin Cronin's "The Passage." "It's kind of an allegory, using this animal as people who are struggling for equal rights," she says. "It's about the haves and have-nots and prejudice."
