Langella was friends with Tandy and her husband Hume Cronyn, and one night he and Tandy went to see a show where one of Tandy's contemporaries was giving what Langella said was a terrible performance, through which the actress was trying to recapture past glories. Langella says Tandy turned to him and merely said, "You would tell me, darling, wouldn't you?" "She was age appropriate to the end," Langella writes.
