3. 'Reactance' makes people behave in strange ways

According to an article Weil and her husband read, two married professors studied their own behavior and discovered that often, one person will do the exact opposite of what the other person wants – sometimes to strange and uncharacteristic lengths. The professor called this "reactance" – a behavior stemming from a fear that one spouse will lose independence in the relationship by doing what the other wants. If you're refusing to do something just to disagree, it's important to realize where your insecurity may be coming from.
