Russia is one of the most ethnically diverse countries in the world thanks to a land mass that covers nine time zones. From Tatars to Buryats, Bashkirs to Kalmyks, Mordvins to Chuvashs, the many peoples of Russia bring with them their unique cultures, customs, and costumes.

These costumes will likely take a prominent role in the opening ceremonies. And it won't be difficult to play the spot-the-difference game here: Ethnic dress from southern Russian regions (on the photo) will be a stark contrast to national costumes from southern Siberia or the Ural Mountains region.
