It used to be that the phrase “top UK university” was synonymous with Oxbridge – a portmanteau of the names of the country’s two most lauded institutions. But Imperial College, whose full name is The Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, now consistently clocks in as one of the world’s leading colleges. This year it holds the distinction of having the best civil and structural engineering program in the world, according to the QS rankings. It’s also the alma mater of Sir Alexander Fleming (best remembered for discovering something called penicillin), H.G. Wells, and Nicholas Tombazis – better known as the chief designer for Ferrari.
