Age and wisdom frequently go hand-in-hand, so it makes sense that the English-speaking world’s oldest university remains one of the world’s greatest, at least per the QS ranking system. Dating back to the 12th century, Oxford is the second-oldest surviving university in the world, after Italy’s University of Bologna. It’s also perhaps the world’s most dominant institution in the humanities. This year its philosophy, modern languages, geography, and English language and literature departments all placed first in the world.
