Moved from Hawaii to Panama City when he was 27. Now he runs his own real estate firm.

• He says housing prices aren't much cheaper in Panama City than where his mother lives in Richmond, Va.

• But the cost of doctors, dentists, and car repairs is one-fourth of what it is in the US. And retirees receive discounts on everything from energy bills to train fares.

• Minuses: It is not as clean or organized as living in the US. Customer service can be "untenable."

• Pluses: diverse expat community, good theaters and restaurants, activities ranging from book clubs to scuba diving.

• "It's not for everyone, but it's fantastic."
