Four who live south of the border

Fran and Andy Browne sail on a catamaran near their home in northwestern Costa Rica.

Moved from North Carolina to Costa Rica, largely because of the high cost of US health care.

• They rent a four-bedroom home overlooking the Pacific for $1,400 a month.

• Drawbacks: Costs are rising, petty crime and theft have increased in recent years, and it's expensive when compared with other Latin American countries.

• Pluses: Living on the beach, affordable and quality health care, large expat community, good restaurants, easy flights to the US.

• "It has everything you want except snow," says Andy.
