The International Criminal Court's docket in Africa

With the confirmation of charges against four senior Kenyan leaders, there are now seven different countries where the International Criminal Court has filed charges of crimes against humanity. All of those cases emanate from Africa.

7. Libya charges

Three Libyan officials, Col. Muammar Qaddafi, his son Saif al-Islam, and Abdullah al-Senussi, were charged with crimes against humanity during the ultimately successful overthrow of Muammar Qaddafi last year. The ICC has begun investigation against the Qaddafi regime’s use of the army and security services to kill and intimidate opposition members and civilian supporters. Charges against Muammar Qaddafi, who was killed in October 2011, have been dropped by the ICC, but charges remain in place against Saif and al-Senussi. Both remain in custody of the new Libyan authorities.
