Our name is about honesty. The Monitor is owned by The Christian Science Church, and we’ve always been transparent about that.
The Church publishes the Monitor because it sees good journalism as vital to progress in the world. Since 1908, we’ve aimed “to injure no man, but to bless all mankind,” as our founder, Mary Baker Eddy, put it.

… for taking swimming lessons. To his credit, Bass not only acknowledged that he didn’t know how to swim, but displayed a lot of humility by joining the children from a Boys & Girls Club of Boston in the shallow end to take his first lessons. Given that he is a sturdy 6 ft. 8 in. and 260 pounds, that made him look out of place. But Bass said he wanted to be comfortable in the water for his two young children.
