The record was set in a 40-0 drubbing of Syracuse. Penn State’s defense was almost impregnable in 1947, shutting out six teams in nine games. Syracuse actually lost 107 yards on the ground, but cut its losses by gaining 60 passing yards. In that season’s Cotton Bowl, Penn State’s perfect season was ended when it played Southern Methodist to a 13-13 draw.
