Wright actually won more tournaments in 1963 (a record 13), but she won more majors (three) in 1961. Those, coupled with seven other victories, constitute one of the greatest years ever turned in on the LPGA tour. She was so dominant from 1961 to 1964 that it was a surprise only when she didn’t win. During that stretch she became the only LPGA player to ever hold all four major championships simultaneously, with titles in the US Women’s Open, LPGA Championship, Titleholders, and Western Open over two years.
