What becomes of the Big Ten’s Stagg-Paterno Trophy, awarded to the conference’s championship football team?
Paterno’s name is being removed from the trophy, according to Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany, who said it would be “inappropriate” to keep it there. The trophy was presented for the first time last season, when the league held its inaugural postseason championship game. Henceforth, it will simply be the Stagg Championship Trophy. Amos Alonzo Stagg coached at the University of Chicago, which was a founding member of the Big Ten in 1896. Stagg coached the Maroons from 1892 to 1932.
