In today's 24/7 news cycle, it isn’t hard for controversial comments about race and other sensitive topics to turn into a public spectacle. Here are five individuals who made controversial statements – and here are the consequences they faced.

3. Phil Robertson

What was said: In a conversation with GQ magazine, the “Duck Dynasty” patriarch implied that blacks in the South were better off before the civil rights era. He also called homosexuality unnatural and claimed that gays were incapable of inheriting “the kingdom of God.”

What resulted: Mr. Robertson was suspended “indefinitely” by the A&E channel – for all of nine days. The show aired during its normal schedule thereafter, though ratings have plummeted.
