When: April 2014
What was said: At a “press conference” attended by a slew of his supporters and one journalist, the Nevada rancher implied that black Americans receiving welfare benefits would be better off enslaved.
What resulted: Not much. A few conservative politicians, including Sens. Dean Heller (R) of Nevada and Rand Paul (R) of Kentucky, distanced themselves from Mr. Bundy after previously supporting his standoff with federal officials over his refusal to pay to graze his cattle on federal land. Today, his cattle continue to graze that land, and the Bureau of Land Management maintains he owes some $1 million.
