As governor, Bush didn’t shy away from controversy – or his faith-driven views on life. And in the case of Terri Schiavo, a Florida woman on life support who had been declared brain-dead by doctors, Bush got involved in the legal battle. In 2003, after Mrs. Schiavo’s feeding tube was removed, the Florida legislature passed a bill granting Bush the right to intervene. He did, ordering the tube reinserted. Bush also approved Florida’s “Choose Life” license plate. In 2005, he signed a measure requiring parental notification for teenage girls before an abortion.

Bush was raised Episcopal, but in the 1990s converted to Roman Catholicism, his wife’s faith.
