Government shutdown 101: 12 ways it could affect you

With Congress failing to fund the federal government by Oct. 1, the start of the new fiscal year, the government has gone into partial shutdown. Here is a list of what's open, and what isn't, during the shutdown.

8. Will law enforcement and public safety be affected?

Expect delays on the issuing of federal gun permits during the government shutdown.

Even though public safety, such as air traffic control and airport screenings, is considered an essential government function, some aspects will be affected by the shutdown. Expect delays on applications to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives for gun permits. The following were suspended during the last shutdown: work on bankruptcy cases, recruitment and testing of federal law enforcement officials (including border patrol agents), and enforcement of delinquent child support.
