Gay marriage battlegrounds: 7 states to watch

In the states, the battle over gay marriage is gathering steam. Federal judges have preempted local efforts toward legal gay marriage in some states, while activists in other states are gearing up for ballot measures. One state may be moving toward a stronger defense of traditional marriage. Here's the state-by-state rundown.

3. Arizona

Activists are collecting signatures to put gay marriage on the ballot in 2014, aimed at overturning Arizona’s 2008 constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage.

In 2012, a PPP poll found that 77 percent of the state’s voters support either same-sex marriage or civil unions. Some Arizona cities are taking matters into their own hands. On June 4, the city council in Bisbee voted to allow same-sex civil unions, making it the first town in Arizona to offer legal recognition of gay couples. Other cities, including Tempe, are considering similar ordinances.
