Daniel Mireles and his wife Eloise were convicted of stealing more than $255,000 from Harris County Texas in 2010. The money came from a fund for intended for victims of crime. After begging Judge Kevin Fine for leniency, the pair was sentenced to an unusually long and humiliating punishment.
In addition to jail time, an order to pay back the money, and community service, the couple were sentenced to hold signs reading, "I am a thief" at a busy Houston intersection for five hours every weekend for six years.
The Mireles couple also had to post a sign in front of their home reading, "The occupants of this residence, Daniel and Eloise Mireles, are convicted thieves."
