The protagonist of the 2011 ABC series is Tessa Altman (Jane Levy), a teenage girl who loves her life in New York City and is not pleased when her father (Jeremy Sisto) decides to move them to the suburbs north of the city. At first, Tessa views many of their neighbors and her classmates as materialistic and overly obsessed with making the town perfect.
