The 1968 movie directed by Franklin J. Schaffner follows George Taylor (Charlton Heston), an astronaut whose ship crashes into a body of water and who is taken captive by apes after the rest of his companions are injured or killed. He soon discovers that the world he has stranded himself on is home to a society in which apes rule and humans are slaves. You probably know the twist ending, but it still packs a punch, and like any good sci-fi story, the strict class system depicted in the film has lessons for the audience.
According to Flavorwire, "The Twilight Zone" creator Rod Serling was behind the movie's famous twist ending – he co-wrote the script.
