The 1940 film does not follow a single plot line but instead sets animated sequences to famous pieces of classical music, including a scene of fairies, flowers, and others dancing to selections from Pyotr Ilych Tchaikovsky's the "Nutcracker Suite," dinosaurs roaming the planet to the strains of Igor Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring," and evil spirits of the dead being raised from their graves to the sound of "Night on Bald Mountain" by Modest Mussorgsky.
The movie is often remembered for the Sorcerer's Apprentice sequence in which Mickey Mouse tries to make his work easier and ends up flooding his master's home. This section is accompanied by Paul Dukas's music of the same name.
"Fantasia" has been re-released multiple times. The film was released in what was known as "road shows" (limited-run appearances at select theaters where seats had to be reserved) through 1940 and 1941, then came out again in 1942 and 1946. The movie was then brought back to theaters multiple times, including runs in 1963, 1977, and 1990.
