Spielberg returned to World War II with his 1998 film, which chronicled American soldiers searching for a man who is given leave to go home after his brothers are killed. Spielberg won the Best Director Oscar again, but the film famously lost the Best Picture Academy Award to "Shakespeare in Love." Spielberg was given the script of the film by Tom Hanks, who eventually starred as Captain John H. Miller. Many of the actors who played soldiers, including Hanks, Giovanni Ribisi, and Tom Sizemore, participated in a boot camp before filming – however, Matt Damon, who played Private Ryan, did not, ostensibly so the other actors would resent him and that could then be translated to the movie.
