The novel was published in 1952 and is best for high school students and older. It focuses on the experience of African-Americans in modern America, including the struggles for individual identity. The fictional work explores ideas around black nationalism, Marxism, and the policies of Booker T. Washington, who served as a political advisor to presidents of the United States.
