Here's a look at some of the most prolific tech companies today and how they ended up with their names.

12. iPod

The iPod was both released in the year 2001 and got its name from Stanley Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey.”

Freelance copywriter Vinnie Chieco saw the white device with a round menu button and immediately thought of the movie line, “Open the Pod Bay doors, HAL.” At the time, Steve Jobs was branding iMac and iLife, so in order to keep in line with branding, he decided on iPod. According to CultofMac, Mr. Jobs originally rejected the name, but later came around to it.
