Here's a look at some of the most prolific tech companies today and how they ended up with their names.

17. Verizon

Verizon and Netflix went back and forth in blog posts this week after Netflix blamed the telecoms company for slow loading speeds in an error message.

While most tech companies go for wacky, hybrid terms that are memorable, even if a little silly, Verizon wanted something with gravitas.

According to Verizon’s corporate history, the name is a combination of the Latin words “veritas” and “horizon.” Veritas refers to truth and reliability, while horizon signifies forward-looking and visionary.

The logo is meant to graphically portray speed.
