860–880 Lake Shore Drive

Also known as the "glass house apartments," this pair of symmetrical glass-and-steel apartment towers over Lake Shore Drive, in Chicago, not far from the lip of Lake Michigan. According to one critic, the buildings, which are each 26 stories tall, strike "the perfect balance between rational structure and irrational spirit." Finished in 1951, the Lake Shore Drive towers were officially recognized as historical landmarks in 1996.
