Deadliest Catch, the popular Discovery Channel reality show that depicts crab fishermen working in the dangerous waters off Alaska, will be airing a series of special episodes that will pay tribute to Capt. Phil Harris, the late captain of the fishing vessel Cornelia Marie.
Capt. Harris died in Anchorage on Feb. 9.
Next Tuesday's episode will show Harris falling ill. The next seven episodes will show his crew dealing with Harris's deteriorating condition and eventual death. The July 20th episode will be followed by an hour-long look back at Harris's life.
On the most recent episode, viewers witnessed an emotional confrontation after Harris's son, Jake, acknowledged to his dad that he was an addict after admitting to stealing his Capt. Harris's pain medication. In that episode, the gruff captain vowed to disown his son.
In a statement detailing the plotlines of the next six episodes of the Emmy-winning program, Discovery Channel President Clark Bunting eulogized the hardworking fisherman and father of two.
"Captain Phil was a father, fisherman, funny man and, most importantly for fans worldwide, a friend. We celebrate his life and all those he has touched through Deadliest Cath," said Bunting. "I wish this would never have been a storyline of the series, but I am proud of the heart and emotion we have worked so hard to put into these very special episodes as a tribute to Phil."
