If the thought of Nissan Leafs and Chevy Volts gets your heart racing, you may feel right at home in Washington. There were 23,563 alternative fuel vehicles on Washington roads in 2011, a 2 percent share of the total US, according to EIA. The state is projected to rank No. 5 in the country's highest electric vehicle sales between 2012 and 2020, according to Pike Research.
Washington has done much to harness the power of its plentiful (and scenic) natural resources. The Evergreen State's hydroelectric dams produced more than a quarter of the nation's net hydroelectric generation in 2011, according to the EIA, and ranked sixth in the nation in net generation of electricity from wind. Evergreen, indeed.
