6 things Obama must do at the Democratic National Convention

Many American voters will view the 2012 election as a referendum on the Obama presidency, so party leaders need to be ready with their defense. Here are six things Democrats and Obama can do at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C. this week if they want to secure victory over Mitt Romney and the GOP in November.

5. Defend Obama's record

Those who strongly oppose the president will vote for Romney. In a Washington Post/ABC News poll last month, more than half of the respondents leaning toward Romney characterized their choice as a vote against Obama.

But many registered voters who lean toward Obama have different motivations. Three of 4 of them said their vote is for the president, not against Romney. The convention gives Democratic leaders a golden opportunity to reframe the debate and showcase Obama's successes.
