6 ways parents can cut college costs

It's not too late to reduce the cost of sending your son or daughter to college. Putting aside well-known strategies like having your child apply for niche scholarships, excel at a sport, start at a community college, or get a perfect score on the SAT, here are 6 strategies parents can employ.

5. Arrive with a clear plan and sense of direction

Invest as much time and energy as possible helping your student clarify their future goals while in high school. Consider selecting a major and mapping out a tentative career path. Students who know why they’re in school are significantly more likely to succeed, and are less likely to transfer, change majors, or drop out – all of which can be costly. 

Encourage your student to take skills assessments, read books about career options, interview your friends about their jobs, intern in the summer, and get to know college students to learn about what they’re studying.
