6 ways parents can cut college costs

It's not too late to reduce the cost of sending your son or daughter to college. Putting aside well-known strategies like having your child apply for niche scholarships, excel at a sport, start at a community college, or get a perfect score on the SAT, here are 6 strategies parents can employ.

6. Advocate and negotiate

If your child receives a financial aid package that precludes attending the school, call up the financial aid office and let them know. Impress upon them all the homework that you've done and why the school is a great fit for your child. Often, depending on the school's situation, they may be able to offer additional support.
