For me, coffee is up there with kittens and cookie dough as the best thing on earth. If you're a fellow fan of the bean, join me in celebration! Today is National Coffee Day, so we rounded up everywhere you can get a free (or cheap) cup o' Joe. You're welcome.

Brooklyn Water Bagel Co.

Celebrate National Coffee Day all month long with $1 12 oz hot coffees until the end of September. Stop by on 9/29, for a free Cold Brewsta!

Caribou Coffee

You can't get free coffee at Caribou this year, but you CAN use the proceeds from your morning cup to give a free one to someone in need. Buy a cup of Amy's Blend on 9/29 and a cup of coffee will be donated to the nurses and families in cancer centers nationwide. Amy's Blend is named for Amy Erickson, one of Caribou's first roastmakers, who lost her battle with breast cancer in 1995.

Coffee Culture Cafe

Between 6am and 11am, you can stop by Coffee Culture Cafe and get yourself a free small coffee.

Cumberland Farms

Text the word FREECOFFEE to 33733 and you'll receive a coupon a coupon for a free hot or iced coffee of any size, valid at Cumberland Farms locations on 9/29.

Dunkin Donuts

Pick up a free medium cup (either iced or hot) of Dunkin' Donuts special Dark Roast to celebrate its one-year anniversary. This offer is available on 9/29 and is limited to one cup per customer.

Krispy Kreme

McDonald's

Last year, McDonald's offered a free small coffee during breakfast, and we expect the fast food giant to celebrate this year's holiday in a similar fashion.

Peet's Coffee

Last year Peet's had BOGO coffee, and although they haven't yet announced anything, it looks like they have something special up their sleeve this year. In response to a Facebook fan's comment asking about National Coffee Day deals on their page, a rep for Peet's said: "National Coffee Day is indeed just around the corner! Just wait and see what we have coming up!"

Pilot Flying J

Pick up a free, 16 oz coffee from Pilot Flying J on 9/29 when you present an online coupon, which will be available on the travel center chain's Facebook Page tomorrow.

Whole Foods

Snatch up a 12 oz coffee from the coffee bar at participating Whole Foods Markets for just $0.25 on Tuesday!

Dear Reader,

About a year ago, I happened upon this statement about the Monitor in the Harvard Business Review – under the charming heading of “do things that don’t interest you”:

“Many things that end up” being meaningful, writes social scientist Joseph Grenny, “have come from conference workshops, articles, or online videos that began as a chore and ended with an insight. My work in Kenya, for example, was heavily influenced by a Christian Science Monitor article I had forced myself to read 10 years earlier. Sometimes, we call things ‘boring’ simply because they lie outside the box we are currently in.”

If you were to come up with a punchline to a joke about the Monitor, that would probably be it. We’re seen as being global, fair, insightful, and perhaps a bit too earnest. We’re the bran muffin of journalism.

But you know what? We change lives. And I’m going to argue that we change lives precisely because we force open that too-small box that most human beings think they live in.

The Monitor is a peculiar little publication that’s hard for the world to figure out. We’re run by a church, but we’re not only for church members and we’re not about converting people. We’re known as being fair even as the world becomes as polarized as at any time since the newspaper’s founding in 1908.

We have a mission beyond circulation, we want to bridge divides. We’re about kicking down the door of thought everywhere and saying, “You are bigger and more capable than you realize. And we can prove it.”
